2012 Mosquito Control Efforts - Program Update

Rising river levels resulting from warmer weather and melting snow have triggered the hatching of mosquito larvae and the beginning of the Fraser Valley Regional District's nuisance mosquito conrol season.

The FVRD has been monitoring, mapping, and treating new and known mosquito development sites.  Sites are treated with a non-toxic bacterial larvicide that specifically targets the mosquito in its larval stage before it can fly. These efforts will continue throughout the mosquito season.

Residents are reminded to eliminate sources of standing water around their properties from things like old tires or clogged gutters as these can become potential mosquito breeding habitat.

General Program Information

Nuisance mosquitoes, also known as flood water mosquitoes are the first to appear after a flood or rising water. These mosquitoes rarely cause human disease, but are small voracious biters who travel far and in dense swarms in search of blood meals needed to survive.

In order to conduct the required nuisance mosquito control activities, the FVRD is required to operate under a Pest Management Plan approved by the Ministry of Environment under the Integrated Pest Management Act.
