Regional District and Hospital District Board Chair Elections 

Each year, regional districts and hospital districts elect new chairs and vice chairs to its boards. For 2018, the Board has re-elected Jason Lum and Patricia Ross as the Board Chair and Vice Chair for the regional district. The hospital district has re-elected Henry Braun and Chuck Stam as Chair and Acting Chair.

FVRD Purchases Vedder River Campground

On June 30, the FVRD entered into an agreement with the Cultus Lake Park Board (CLPB) to purchase the Vedder River Campground for $650,000. The CLPB continued to operate the campground for the remainder of the 2017 camping season. The Province of British Columbia has signed off on the FVRD’s Licence of Occupation. Now, the FVRD and the CLPB are working together for a smooth transition of the operation. Details of improvements and changes to the campground’s operation are expected in the months to come.

Simon Gibson named Honourary Board Chair for November

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of regional districts in the province of BC, Simon Gibson was named as this month’s honourary board chair. Simon served as councillor for the City of Abbotsford for over 30 years and was the vice chair of the FVRD in 2002. Currently, Simon is serving his second term as MLA for Abbotsford-Mission and previously held the position of Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Education for Independent Schools.

Parcel Tax Approved for Cultus Lake Water System

In 2016, the FVRD established a service area to provide major improvements to the Cultus Lake Integrated Water System. Resident electors voted in favour of borrowing $3.9 million for these upgrades. Now, a parcel tax is required to service this debt. For 2018, the parcel tax rate will be $229.98.

New Sub-Regional Service Area for Abbotsford Parks

The Board has given three readings to Bylaw No. 1454, 2017 to establish a sub-regional park service in Abbotsford, now that the City is no longer tied to Metro Vancouver. The new service would include Abbotsford and a portion of Electoral Area G. The proposed new model would include  west and east Sumas Mountain, east Glen Valley Park, and Matsqui Trail, with the City of Abbotsford directly managing Matsqui Trail with its own staff. Next steps require consideration by Abbotsford Council, and approval by the Province. It is hoped that the new arrangement will be in place by February 1, 2018.

Upgrades Coming to Lake Errock Water System

The FVRD will move forward with installing 760 metres of watermain for the Lake Errock Water System. The $419,000 project will be funded by a $333,450 grant from the Building Canada Fund and the remainder through a capital construction loan. Over 50 percent of property owners in the service area voted in favour of this project.
