Canyon to Coast Trail Takes Another Step Forward

September 19, 2017

Experience the Fraser’s Canyon to Coast Trail is another 18 kilometres closer to completion with today’s opening of a trail segment between Island 22 Regional Park and Ferry Island Provincial Park. This trail mostly runs along existing dykes, and is only 5 kilometres from Chilliwack’s historic downtown.

Launched in 2009 as a partnership between the Province, Fraser Valley Regional District, and Metro Vancouver, Experience the Fraser is a long-term project to connect communities, parks, and natural features along the Lower Fraser River from Hope to the Salish Sea. The connection is made by way of the Canyon to Coast Trail and a recreational Blueway, which creates opportunities for people to explore the natural and cultural heritage of the Fraser River and its neighbouring communities.

Since 2009, approximately 235 kilometres of the anticipated 550 kilometre Canyon to Coast Trail have been completed. This most recent section was completed with the help of the provincial Job Creation Partnership Program, which provides on-the-ground job skills training for unemployed workers. Through this program, and with the assistance of Ecoworks Landscape Services Inc., infrastructure at Island 22 Regional Park was upgraded to enhance the visitor experience. Upgrades include a new picnic shelter, larger parking lot, improved off-leash dog park and additional outhouse.

Jason Lum, Chair of the FVRD says, “This trail segment truly illustrates the power of partnerships, and how they can produce win-win strategies for everyone. This trail segment brings the Canyon to Coast Trail 18 kilometres closer to its goal; augments the City of Chilliwack’s robust and growing trail system, supports the Province’s commitment to support and promote recreational tourism, and also provided local citizens with job skills training and experience.”

Looking to the future, Experience the Fraser projects already underway with the Province and others include:

  • the completion of 8 kilometres of Canyon to Coast Trail in Mission’s Stave West area
  • establishing a safe pathway for cyclists and pedestrians over the Agassiz-Rosedale Bridge to connect Agassiz to the Canyon to Coast Trail
  • designing a multi-user pathway on the historic Kettle Valley Railway bridge, which runs underneath the Fraser-Hope Bridge
