Radon Awareness

In partnership with the BC Lung Foundation, Take Action on Radon, and Fraser Health, the FVRD is helping to distribute radon test kits to increase awareness of radon presence in our communities.

In all communities tested, radon levels of some risk were measured. The FVRD is helping provide radon kits for residents who wish to measure radon in their homes. The BC Ministry of Health and the BC Centre for Disease Control are the responsible authorities for radon-related health-related concerns. The FVRD are not health experts and direct residents with questions about their health or health risks associated with possible radon to contact their health authority for information.

What is Radon?

Radon is a colourless, odourless, and tasteless radioactive gas that occurs naturally in the soil but can accumulate in homes, workplaces, and other buildings.

Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers. The longer and higher your exposure to radon, the greater your risk of developing lung cancer.

How could I be exposed to radon?

Radon enters homes through the foundation and accumulates in the air on the lowest level of a home. Breathing in radon exposes the lungs to radioactive gases, which may result in adverse health effects.

How can I learn about my level of radon exposure?

Test your home using a radon test kit. You can buy a test kit online or borrow one from the Fraser Valley Regional Library

All free test kits have now been claimed and can be dropped off from April 1, 2024 to April 4, 2024 at the following locations:
