Planning & Development
In its most simple terms, Planning is about protecting the public interest.
Planners guide decisions about where development will occur in towns, cities and rural areas. They balance development and growth with preserving land for the enjoyment of current and future generations. Planners ensure citizens have access to parks and green areas, while also meeting the need for services such as schools, shopping and livable neighbourhoods.
It's challenging to meet the need for growth while still preserving land to provide a high quality of life and a sustainable future. It's the goal of planners everywhere to balance the environmental, economic and social needs of the communities they serve.
This balance is achieved through the use of permits, zoning regulations and Official Community Plan guidelines. Although the basic concept of planning is simple, the process of achieving balance is complex.
