ANNUAL FLOODWATER MOSQUITO CONTROL PROGRAM

June 4, 2025

With summer quickly approaching, mosquito season will soon be here. To help keep the abundance of adult mosquitoes within tolerable levels, the annual Fraser Valley Regional District Floodwater Mosquito Control Program is now underway.

Residents may begin to notice technicians dressed in brightly coloured vests working near river edges sampling flood and seepage waters. These mosquito control technicians with Morrow BioScience Ltd. monitor water levels and mosquito larvae development on behalf of the FVRD, and when appropriate, provide localized control to reduce the number of larvae before they hatch into adult mosquitoes.

Even though the mosquito forecast for the year is expected to be below average due to relatively low snow accumulation, an uptick in mosquito abundance is still anticipated for June and July as river levels rise and mosquito larvae begin to hatch.  Local increases in mosquito abundance may be particularly noted if there is heavy rainfall or if residents are near rivers or wetted areas where larvae emerge.

Residents are encouraged to reduce their exposure to mosquito bites through personal protective measures such as wearing long-sleeved shirts and pants, choosing light-coloured clothing, using insect repellent, and ensuring window screens are properly installed and maintained. Removing or refreshing standing water such as bird baths, old tires, clogged gutters, animal troughs, and kiddy pools, can also make a difference.
