EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS WEEK: Be Prepared. Know Your Risks.

May 5, 2025

Our climate is changing. Annual precipitation has increased across the province, and summers tend to be drier than in the past. These trends contribute to increasingly destructive weather events, including flooding.

Emergency Preparedness Week (May 4-10, 2025) is a national awareness initiative coordinated by Public Safety Canada in close collaboration with the provinces, territories, and partners. FVRD is utilizing the opportunity of this week to encourage residents and businesses to be prepared and know their risks for themselves and their communities in advance of disasters.

The FVRD utilizes Alertable to send alerts to residents, businesses, and visitors during critical events. Alertable is an emergency notification system. Additionally, the Province of British Columbia has their own emergency alert system. Please anticipate on Wednesday, May 7, 2025 at 1:55 p.m. a provincial emergency test alert and on Saturday, May 10, 2025 at 1:55 p.m., the FVRD will be issuing a test alert to all our subscribers. Both test alerts will be broadcast through Alertable and that is an intentional process to ensure that people receive the messages in all the ways that they wish to be informed. Testing is an important function of the system in order to verify functionality and also identify any potential issues – thank you for being part of these essential public safety tests. We encourage you to engage with the test surveys that help us verify you receive the notifications.

“At the FVRD, we are proud to be making emergency preparedness tools for the region that work for residents, businesses, and visitors,” said Patricia Ross, FVRD Board Chair. “Everyone plays an important role in being prepared for an emergency,” she said.

Available FVRD documents include the Hazard Report which explains the hazards associated with living in the region. Once the hazards are known, residents can use the Emergency Preparedness Workbook to prepare their family, home, or business to be more resilient to the hazards that are most common in their community. More information on how to prepare in the event of an emergency and how to sign up for Alertable can be found by visiting  https://www.fvrd.ca/EN/main/services/emergency-management.html The Province of British Columbia will be hosting public webinars during the week, to register via Zoom visit https://ca01web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_jaBGRfU0RdCkJzn661gLrg#/registration
