LOCAL GOVERNMENT AWARENESS WEEK

May 12, 2025

Each year, the Union of British Columbia Municipalities (UBCM) celebrates Local Government Awareness Week. The goal of the UBCM initiative is to bring education and awareness about the roles and responsibilities of local government.

The FVRD is excited to be sharing interesting details about the regional district during Local Government Awareness Week from May 11 to 17, 2025.

“As a local government, the FVRD is truly on the front lines of innovation and change,” said Patricia Ross, FVRD Board Chair.

This week a few of the cherished FVRD facilities will be showcased on FVRD social media channels to align with the Local Government Awareness Week’s theme, Infrastructure.

When the Province first established regional districts in 1967, the current region had three regional districts (Fraser-Cheam, Dewdney-Alouette, and Central Fraser Valley). In 1995, the three were amalgamated to form the Fraser Valley Regional District. The FVRD delivers over 100 services to approximately 340,000 residents across a land base of 13,361 square kilometres. The FVRD’s eight electoral areas include all of the unincorporated communities on the north and south sides of the Fraser River, reaching up beyond the Nahatlatch River in the north and extending down to the U.S. border in the south. The FVRD is responsible for governance, administration and services for the eight electoral areas, each named separately by letters of the alphabet (A-H), and represented on the board by a locally elected director. Electoral area residents pay only for those services provided to the electoral area in which they reside. More information about the FVRD is available at fvrd.ca.
