ATMOSPHERIC RIVER UPDATE – Sunday, Dec. 14
More heavy rainfall is expected tonight, with rain easing by early Monday evening as the system moves off. With rain in the forecast, community members are reminded that there may be increased risk of landslide activity with the additional rain causing further slope destabilization. Learn more about the risks of landslides.
The FVRD Emergency Operation Centre (EOC) continues to operate, with staff responding and working with partner agencies to address a variety of issues throughout the region. Residents are reminded to stay away from high-risk areas, such as landslides, dikes, and flooded areas. Not only are the dangers in these areas extremely high, but when residents enter these areas, it puts everyone at risk, including our first responders.
Areas of impact:
- On December, 10th the FVRD declared a State of Local Emergency (SOLE) for FVRD Electoral Area E to support prompt coordination of action or special regulation of persons or property to protect the health, safety or well-being of persons or the safety of property or objects or sites of heritage value. This state of Local Emergency remains in place.
- The Evacuation ORDER and ALERT for the area of Electoral Area E - Wilson Road issued on December,10th is still in effect. People must leave the Evacuation Order area immediately and be ready to leave the Evacuation Alert area on short notice or if they feel unsafe. For those evacuated, please visit https://ess.gov.bc.ca/ to self-register for Emergency Support Services.
The FVRD would like to remind residents to stay safe and take precautions during this time. Please stay away from swift-running rivers and unstable banks. Due to the soil saturation, expect possible erosion and debris slides.
