Transit Planning

The Fraser Valley is served by three distinct transit systems:

  • Chilliwack Transit System
  • Central Fraser Valley Transit System (Abbotsford-Mission)
  • FVRD Transit System

Transit service is delivered through a partnership between local governments, BC Transit, and Transdev Canada, the contracted operating company. These systems are distinct and separately managed but coordinated to provide connections across the Fraser Valley and into Metro Vancouver.

FVRD Transit Planning

To learn more about long-term transit priorities, see the Transit Future Action Plan for the FVRD and Chilliwack transit systems.

Each year, BC Transit works with local governments to confirm transit service priorities and coordinate budgets through three-year Transit Improvement Plans (TIPs). Once approved by local governments, BC Transit submits funding requests to the Province for approval.

FVRD Transit Cost-Sharing

Under BC Transit’s funding formula, the Province funds 46.69% of conventional transit costs, and local government partners fund the remaining 53.31%. Revenue generated by the transit system is used to reduce the local share funded through property taxation.

The following partners share the local government costs for the FVRD’s regional routes:

  • Agassiz–Harrison (Route 71): FVRD (Electoral Area D), District of Kent, Village of Harrison Hot Springs, City of Chilliwack
  • Hope (Route 72): District of Hope
  • Fraser Valley Express/FVX (Route 66): City of Chilliwack, City of Abbotsford

The FVRD also maintains Transit Service Agreements with the following First Nations to provide service to their communities:

  • Agassiz–Harrison (Route 71): Cheam First Nation
  • Hope (Route 72): Seabird Island Band, Yale First Nation, Chawathil First Nation

FVRD Transit Initiatives

Rural Transit Needs Assessment and Action Plan

The FVRD is undertaking a Rural Transit Needs Assessment and Action Plan to better understand transportation needs in rural and remote communities, First Nations, and the municipalities of Hope, Kent, and Harrison Hot Springs. The study will identify transportation gaps and challenges and explore a range of transit and mobility options. Learn more about the study at haveyoursay.fvrd.ca/rural-transit.

North of Fraser Transit Service

A new bus route has been proposed along Highway 7 between Agassiz and Mission, serving multiple communities and First Nations along the corridor. While the project has experienced funding delays, planning and engagement have continued. To learn more about the project or read the Phase 2 Feasibility Study, visit engage.bctransit.com/nof2025.

Fraser Valley Express (FVX) Service

The Fraser Valley Express is an important interregional service connecting Chilliwack and Abbotsford to Metro Vancouver. Service needs and improvement opportunities are reviewed through the annual transit planning process. The most recent expansion, in January 2026, added 9,500 service hours to enhance weekday and weekend schedules. For up-to-date schedules, visit bctransit.com.
